Demographics

As in the rest of Catalonia, the second half of the nineteenth century saw a exodus from the countryside to the towns. This is the determining factor in the present-day demographic pattern of small rural villages with shrinking populations and towns with an ever increasing number of inhabitants.

The Costa Daurada covers an area of 6,283 square kilometres and has a population of 612.149 in ten comarques (counties), which are in turn divided into 183 municipalities. The population density is 97,4 inhabitants per square kilometre.
